Supplemental Security Income FAQ
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
The Supplemental Security Income program through the Social Security Administration provides monthly payments to people with disabilities and older adults who have little to no income or resources. You are eligible for SSI, as an adult or child, if you have little or no income, little or no resources, and a disability, blindness, or are age 65 or older.
Financial Requirements for SSI
Because SSI is a needs based program, Social Security places a limit on the amount of income and resources you can have to still qualify.
Generally, you can earn up to $1,690.00 per month and still be able to qualify for SSI. If you are blind, you can earn up to $2,830.00 per month and still qualify.
You must also have a limited amount of “resources”. Common resources include vehicles and money in bank accounts. Your resources should not be more than $2,000.00 for individuals and $3,000.00 for couples. That number is increased if you are a parent applying for a child.
The rules and limits can be overwhelming, but the attorneys at Davis Disability Group can help you understand what income and resources apply in your situation.
Disability is required for SSI
For SSI, this means you have a medically documented physical or mental condition that prevents you from engaging in substantial gainful activity.
Substantial gainful activity (SGA) describes a level of work activity and earnings. Work is “substantial” if it involves doing significant physical or mental activities or a combination of both. “Gainful” work activity is work performed for pay or profit, work of a nature generally performed for pay or profit or work intended for profit, whether or not a profit is realized.
SSI requires that your condition has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 continuous months, or is expected to result in death. The 12 month period must be continuous.
